It’s finally here! Tonight is the premiere of The Great Holiday Baking Show on ABC! Oh the little things that make life grand.
Making my day even better was a reunion with
my best friends. I don’t get to see them very often, but when I do, it’s always a great time. No one can make me laugh as hard as they do and no one can predict the inexplicable adventures that are certain to ensue when we’re together. Life definitely has its peaks and valleys, and when the chips are down, my home girls are the ones I want in my 
corner, and I know they’ll always be there. Funny that no matter where we journey through life, the greatest friendships are closest to home.
It was fun to have my friend’s daughter with us and be able to share with her what a gift a true and lasting friendship is. She was able to spend quality time with three mature, strong, and accomplished women. It’s truly an honor and privilege to be such a positive example, and I take that role to heart.

#OPTOUTSIDE #Good Intentions#Weather Had Other Plans
I’d hoped to have a great photo of me enjoying the great outdoors as I love REI’s push to get people outside today. Unfortunately it has been bitterly cold and icy. While I didn’t make it outdoors, I did remain active inside the house. Enlisting my family’s help, construction has begun on a very special Christmas project for my nephew. It’s still a work in progress, but I think he’s going to love it.
Ironically, as much as I love a great bargain, I have absolutely no interest in Black Friday. Fighting crowds of people and traffic just isn’t my idea of fun. For those of you who braved the elements, I hope you found some great deals and enjoyed your day.
And rounding out our week of gratitude, here’s to family and friends who have seen us at our best and at our worst and can’t tell the difference!

Happy Thanksgiving! Some things were just meant to be together like turkey and stuffing, peanut butter and jelly, bread and butter…and how can you separate Batman and Robin, Abbott and Costello, Bert and Ernie, Tom and Jerry or the Lone Ranger and Tonto?! Today especially, I am grateful for my loyal sidekick, Sid. Four years ago, I was unable to spend Thanksgiving with my family. A friend graciously invited me to her house for dinner. My friend’s husband works for an animal hospital, and it just so happened that three stray kittens were at the 
clinic looking for homes. I was told that there was something extra special about one particular kitten named Sid. Shortly after that Thanksgiving, I drove to south Austin to meet this notable feline and his two brothers. And, so, another great duo was born! Sid and I needed each other and were a perfect match.

Today, I am grateful that an adventurous skunk crossing I-35 last night wasn’t delayed about 10 seconds. Subie and I smell much better for the skunk’s considerate timing. Sid is thankful for his Thanksgiving buffet.

Curiosity got the best of me yesterday. I just couldn’t wait any longer. The first lemon has officially been harvested. Its simple beauty was forever captured in photograph, and then its fragrant zest was grated and preserved. I slowly and carefully cut into the delicate, juicy lemon and tasted a slice. Much to my delight, the Meyer lemon was ripe and ready to eat. The flavor was much different than any grocery store lemon. There was this unique level of sweetness that mellowed the sourness just enough to create a delightfully special flavor. 
Now what to do with this newfound treasure?! My brother suggested lemonade, and I’m sure glad he did. After reading a recipe online to get an idea of methodology and proportions, I set out to create the most amazing glass of lemonade possible. My efforts did not disappoint. It was the best lemonade EVER! Determined not to waste any of this fabulous fruit, I cut up the remaining rind and put it down the garbage disposal. My disposal could definitely stand to be cleaned, and grinding the lemon remnants up in it is an excellent way to do just that, naturally.
While I’ve been enjoying the wonder that is my lemon tree, Sid has started taking an interest in the carrot garden. I guess he has the beets under control. Now it’s time to hatch some carrots.
This morning I ventured away from the farm in pursuit of a few groceries and some exceptional deals. My belly is quite content after enjoying a baked sweet potato covered in butter and marshmallows. HEB has fresh sweet potatoes on sale 5 lbs for a dollar so they were definitely on the list. My brother requested a bag of Texas tortilla chips which was free when I purchased a jar of our favorite salsa made right here in Austin. He insists that these are THE chips to eat with that salsa–the perfect combination.
After the trip to the grocery store, I stopped for gas ($1.799/gallon!) and then went to CVS to take advantage of some amazing specials they have this week. I had $5.00 in Extrabucks rewards to redeem, so I selected just over $5.00 worth of items to minimize cash out of pocket. Cheers! Here’s to friends, exceptional bargains, and the sun shining down on this beautiful day. The Texas Hill Country is home to several remarkable wineries. After touring the Grape Creek Vineyards just outside of Fredericksburg, I joined their wine club. I had family visiting, and the vineyard turned out to be the highlight of our trip to the quaint German town. Their wines are not available in regular retail stores, so we decided to buy a few bottles after the tour. By joining the club, I was able to get us a discount on our purchases. The intent was to enjoy the savings, wine, and later quit the club. There are no fees to be in the club, you simply have to purchase three bottles of wine at a discounted price every few months. When the club shipments are ready, they host wine pick-up parties at the vineyard and at their tasting room in Georgetown, TX, which isn’t that far from me. I took a friend to my first pick-up party, and we enjoyed an afternoon of live music, cheese, grapes, and wine. I quickly realized I enjoy being in a wine club. Two years later, I’m still a member. It also helps that I have a silent wine club partner who buys the majority of the bottles from me. I basically enjoy the local perks which include two 1/2 glasses of wine or two 6-wine tastings on any given day. So when I have guests visiting, it’s fun to take them out for a complimentary wine tasting. Today, I needed to pick up a bottle of Texas-grown olive oil for a friend back in MO, so I stopped by Grape Creek’s tasting room to enjoy a free 1/2 glass of Grand Rouge.
And a cheerful toast to today’s bargains it was. I’ve been clipping my coupons as I’ve been sharing them with you, and today was the day I set out to use them. In addition to my promotional pursuits, I was also in need of some basic necessities. So last night, I got online to check prices and look for any coupons I could use on those items. Thanksgiving is officially one week away, so I somehow feel compelled to exercise today. I admit that my balance of exercise to the other components of my life has been off lately and needs to be restored. Motivation is lacking so I need to come up with new and inspiring ways to get myself moving. Today, the means was not new but rather a trip down fitness fad lane–no, I threw out the thigh master years ago. It’s been at least a decade since Billy Blanks graced my tv screen encouraging me to punch and kick my abs and keister into shape. My less than spirited enthusiasm led me to choose the 8-minute Tae Bo workout. Huff…puff…if you’re…huff…puff…going to put in 8 minutes…just breathe, Nic, just breath…this is how to make each one count. It really wasn’t that bad, but it did get my heart rate up in a short amount of time. I probably spent more time trying to figure out how to hook up the VCR than I did on the workout. Sid was intrigued watching the process of me unplugging and plugging in cables and moving his climbing wall out of the way so I’d have room to kick. Once the action started though, he high tailed it out of the room and didn’t return until I’d finished the workout.

There’s finally a chill in the air! I can actually wear jeans and a sweatshirt–might need to shed the sweatshirt when it gets into the 70’s later today though. Sid was so happy to go outside yesterday afternoon after that abrupt cold front viciously blew in during the early hours of the morning. He hadn’t been out in a couple of days and had a terrible case of cabin fever. Unable to contain his excitement, he aggressively ran up the utility pole. He jumped right down, but it was entertaining to watch.
Strolling around the farm, the lemons are ripening. I did a little online research to determine when I can begin picking them as this is the first year I have lemons to harvest! Of course my research yielded conflicting information. The one fact each site could agree on was that the lemons will not continue to ripen once they have been picked. That’s good to know. I will most likely pick one, cut it up, and see for myself how ripe it is. That should satisfy my curiosity.
Actual green beans are now on the plants. At the risk of being a bit too optimistic, I’m really hoping they’ll mature in the next few days
as I’d love to enjoy fresh homegrown green beans around Thanksgiving. Sid is absolutely determined to produce an amazing beet crop this year. He seems to be doing a good job with them. Now, if only I could get him to dig up the weeds… Carrot tops are finally emerging from the soil in the other fall garden box. I love the idea of fresh garden carrots, beets, and green beans this winter. Maybe I can cook a chicken with homegrown lemons to serve with the fresh vegetables. Yum. The trade-off to being able to garden almost year round–I still have to mow the lawn, and it definitely needs it right now.

I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner. While cranberry sauce is not my favorite part of the meal, those tart berries must make their annual appearance on my plate. The dinner is just not complete without them. Some years Mom would take a little extra time with the berries and make her Apple Cranberry Salad. Apples, pineapple and raspberry jello transform the cranberries into a fresh and delightful way to enjoy the holiday staple. Mom always served the sweetened up side in a large, clear apple-shaped bowl. That’s tradition. As an adult, I learned to appreciate fall a lot more. The gorgeous autumn hues of deep purple, rusty red, and rich gold are a decorator’s dream palette. My contribution to Thanksgiving dinner has traditionally been Coke’s Upside Down Pumpkin Pie. I’ve always preferred baking to cooking, so this recipe is the perfect way for me to bring something to our family feast. Coke’s Upside Down Pumpkin Pie eliminates the need for a traditional crust and replaces it with a sweet topping of pecans coated in butter and a yellow cake mix. Personally, I think it tastes much better than a traditional pumpkin pie and is easier to make. When I took Coke’s Upside Down Pumpkin Pie to a Thanksgiving luncheon at work one year, I had people from other departments hunting me down for the recipe. It really is delicious. My garden and plants have responded well to all of the rain we’ve 
recently received. Flowers are blooming, and my vegetable plants have been reinvigorated. It’s hard to believe it’s November, and I’m picking cherry tomatoes. The green beans in both garden boxes are growing strong, and I can finally see my beet plants beginning to grow. The farm cat doesn’t seem to realize the delicate nature of the tiny saplings just starting to emerge from the soil. While I’m sure he’s convinced he’s doing his protective pest control duties, I’m not sure his 16.5 lbs of “mother-henning” the plants is in their best interest.
Sid is also busy enjoying the recent change in the fence. As my neighbor and I attached the old fence sections to the new 
posts, my neighbor noted Sid’s escape route. There was one picket broken at the bottom, right by the old post. I thought Sid would need to go on a diet to fit through, but he soon proved me wrong and the neighbor right. Sid has his own cat door between the two yards. Might need to do something about that.

What a lesson in perseverance! Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals World Series Champions! Thank you for teaching the next generation of baseball fans to never give up. It was a pretty boring game up until the top of the 9th inning. The Royals were down by two, and things did not look promising. I confess, I thought it was over and that the series would conclude another night back in Kansas City. My jaw dropped as the Royals managed to tie the game and take it into extra innings. In a stunning upset, the Royals defeated the Mets in the 12th inning for their first World Series victory in 30 years. It was amazing. Way to go Royals!
