Soles with Goals: 683.24 miles reported!
Sid and I had a guest taking refuge from the rain drops yesterday afternoon. This extremely long and scrawny young kitty has been spending a lot of time in our backyard. I often squirt him with the hose when I’m out watering as he is usually hiding in my flower garden. He quickly runs off to the other side of the fence with Sid none the wiser that he was ever there. Only once have I seen the two face to face. One day when Sid and I were stepping out the back door, we both saw the little trespasser. Much to my surprise (and relief), Sid did absolutely nothing. I thought he would run after the stray to claim his territory. That’s the front Sid gives from inside the house when he’s staring down any critter who dares cross through our yard anyway. I swear that tail is going to break a window one day. Yeah, who am I kidding here? Sid’s not exactly the aggressive type. He watched me get attacked by another roaming cat once and thinks that system is just fine. As you can see, Sid was hard at work this morning–lots of deals to share today.

Happy Birthday, Mom!
When Dad sent me these photos, I couldn’t help but comment on how young Mom looked. To which Dad replied, “She was.” Funny, she’s always been old to me! Ha ha!
I definitely have my mom to thank for making me the refined and sophisticated woman I am today. She really has taught me a lot throughout the years. Check out how well my subtle, disapproving stare is coming along. I still have a ways to go, but I’m getting there.
With all jest aside, Happy, Happy Birthday, Mom! I hope you have a wonderful day and an amazing year ahead!

Half Price Cheeseburger Day at Sonic has been observed in Iowa today. Looks delish, but it was blueberry pancake day in my house. (If pancakes sound good to you, you can find the recipe for Granny’s Pancake Mix on the Flour, Sugar, Eggs… page of the main Recipes section.) I’ve also been busy vacuuming out my shredder per the advice of my Texas mom (see the comments) who pointed out that the paper dust can clog the sensor. It doesn’t seem to be helping in my particular case, but I think it’s a great tip. I never would have thought of it, and what a potentially easy fix. Thanks for sharing!

In an effort to help declutter the house, I’ve been shredding old papers. Yeah, I managed the break the shredder. In the past, it’s gotten hot after being overworked, but this time, it just plain said, “No more!” And that was that. The blisters on my thumb and forefinger are telling me using scissors is not a viable option. I finally got clever enough to use my paper cutter that’s typically used for scrapbooking pages. Since I rarely do any scrapbooking, I’m not too concerned about dulling the blade. Sid found my last method by far the most intriguing. I’m sure I looked pretty silly. It’s not the most efficient method, but hey, it works. If you haven’t figured it out, I am a bit of a pack rat. I think that’s one of the many reasons I really enjoy couponing. While my stockpile isn’t anywhere near “Extreme Couponing” standards, it still represents the fine art of organized hoarding.

Today is a VERY special day in our house–Sid’s 4th Birthday!!! Last night, I decided I would make every effort to actually get up when Sid sounded his morning wake up call (usually about 4:50 am). However, like most excited kids, Sid was a bit eager and came in howling and yowling at 3:30 am. Um…nope…not getting up that early.
So far the birthday boy has enjoyed his morning iced coffee and a very special breakfast. He then got to go outside and explore before it got too hot. It’s now time for a much deserved nap which I’m sure will fill the remainder of his morning schedule.
Presents are a bit challenging. The flavor of Broths Sid likes is not carried in most stores. Apparently most cats prefer fish, but my boy despises it. I was able to find the chicken and vegetables Broths at the pet store yesterday, but they only had two packets. (Yes, I have attempted to make homemade chicken broth for Sid, but he doesn’t seem to trust my cooking.)
While I was at the store, I looked through the cat toys. Sid pretty much has the assortment of items at home already. I couldn’t find anything that would be a new and exciting game for him. The best gifts I’ve been able to give him are sturdy “big boy” pieces of “furniture” built out of spare lumber in Grandpaw’s garage, and that only happens around Christmas.
Sid recently received a sample packet of a higher quality cat food which he liked. Personally, I think it’s better for him than the kind he’s been eating, so I splurged and bought him a bag of it for a birthday present. I also installed a “skylight” in his skyhouse. Hopefully, he can once again fit in the top house part. However, he has yet to go up there. I’m beginning to think he doesn’t have much faith in my construction skills. He never did take to the climbing wall I built him last year.
The one gift I think he’d absolutely love, but is a bit elaborate, is a child’s outdoor playscape. I think he’d be in his glory climbing up it and having a perched view of the yard. It would be fun to see him take the slide down, wouldn’t it?!
Sid has really grown up over the last four years. Sometimes I miss the kitten in him, but he still is a ton of fun. It’s just different games and interests now. He continues to make me laugh and surprises me everyday with something new. Happy Happy Birthday, Sid!

Sid and I are just chilling inside today away from the triple digit heat and dreaming of ways to enjoy sweet juicy blueberries. It just so happens I have a delicious recipe for some pretty amazing Blueberry Muffins. Adding butter and extra sugar on top makes these muffins a cut above your basic breakfast quick bread. You can find the recipe for my scrumptious Blueberry Muffins on the main Recipes page. Give the recipe a try. It might just become one of your go-to recipes!

Yeah, I definitely stocked up on fresh blueberries for the health and nutritional benefits. Was there really any doubt that the first thing I would do when I got my hot little hands on those fresh luscious berries was bake? I don’t have a lot of experience making pies but knew that was exactly what I wanted to make first.
Having received a thorough Pie Lesson From Mom last fall, I knew I would start with her crust recipe. Mom prefers to make her pie crusts in a food processor, but at the time she was teaching me, I didn’t own one. Since I received one as a Christmas present, I used it to quickly mix together a homemade pie crust.
For fun, I wanted to try making a basket weave top for the pie. The lattice work was surprisingly easy, but the edging still completely stumps me. I’ve watched the experts on tv make it look so simple, yet I remain all thumbs and completely perplexed. So basically I came up with my own edging pattern.
As the pie baked, I was especially mindful of the crust edges as I didn’t want them to burn. I let them brown and then covered them with foil. With minutes left on the timer, I could smell something burning. Really? I had been so careful. As I walked toward the oven, Mom’s words resounded loudly in my head, “Do you like cleaning the oven? Put the pie pan on a cookie sheet.” Up until that moment, I had completely forgotten those words of wisdom, and most likely, experience.
The homemade blueberry pie was absolutely delicious! Was it technically perfect? Nope. But it tasted amazing to me, and I will be enjoying it all week long. You can find my recipe for Blueberry Bonanza Pie on the main Recipes page. Now I better get busy putting in my miles for Soles with Goals before the next piece of pie!

Blueberries, Blueberries, Blueberries!!!
It’s blueberry season, and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to stock my freezer full of this healthy and delicious fruit while the berries are at their best and on sale. Utilizing P. Allen Smith’s freezing technique, I placed the unwashed blueberries in a single layer on cookie sheets and cake pans. I then placed the trays of berries in the freezer for about an hour (If I were to do it again, I’d leave them in the freezer longer. I don’t remember how long he recommended.). After removing the blueberries from the freezer, I placed them in quart size bags and labeled them. I was sure to note on the label that they were unwashed blueberries, how many cups were in the bag, and the date they were frozen. Now whenever I want to use them, I simply place the desired amount of berries into a strainer and rinse.
Note: Four 18 oz packages of blueberries filled 4 quart size bags (4 cups each) and about 1 cup in an additional container.

So I’ve been trying to do some deep cleaning around the house. Curtains have been taken down and washed to rid them of dust and cat hair. Most recently, I’ve torn apart my bedroom dusting, vacuuming, and washing all of the bedding including the allergy mattress protector. Once I got to the bare mattress I vacuumed it. Then I sprinkled baking soda on it and vacuumed again. The allergy mattress protector is taking forever to dry so I wasn’t able to get the bedding back on last night. Sid didn’t seem to mind. In fact, he rather liked the super soft extra clean mattress. Argggg!
At bedtime, I really thought he’d enjoy sleeping in the guest room because it was something different. Instead, I realized he had things just the way he wanted them. He had the master suite to himself while I slept in the guest room. About 4:50 am he woke me up howling. I’m guessing he was ready for his iced coffee to be served and to play. Long live King Sid! He clearly rules this house.

I have officially joined the cold brew coffee movement. After running out of K-cups, I decided I would try using ground coffee in one of those refillable pods. Not loving the results and craving iced coffee this time of year, I decided to give cold brewing a try. I filled a gallon jar half full of cold water (2 quarts), added 1 1/3 cups of ground coffee, and then stirred. The mixture simply sat on the counter overnight working its magic. Using a tight meshed strainer lined with a coffee filter, I separated the dark rich liquid from the coffee ground sludge. You can store the concentrated coffee in whatever container you like, but I chose to fill 5 empty Starbucks iced coffee bottles. It was then time for it to chill in the refrigerator. Once it’s good and cold, all I have to do is fill a glass full of ice, pour in some chilled coffee, add milk, and then spoon in the most amazing substance that is Super Scrummy Sweetened Condensed Milk. It’s then time to stir and enjoy this refreshing and delicious start to my day!
I am sold on this method because:
1. I love having the coffee prepared ahead and ready in the morning.
2. The coffee is concentrated so it doesn’t get too diluted when adding ice & milk.
3. I bought a 13 oz can of store brand coffee grounds for $2.48 which tastes just fine prepared this way.
Tip: Put the used coffee grounds in your compost bin.

Soles with Goals Takes on Stewartville Summerfest’s 3 Mile Run
It was a beautiful 57 degrees early Monday morning as preparations began at the Soles with Goals running camp in Stewartville, MN. Racing Meemaw busily prepared an early breakfast of fruit, coffee cake, eggs, and toast for the team. The tasty allure of biscuits and gravy awaited the runners after the race as a hearty and delicious reward. Gigi Twinkle Toes laced up her sneakers tight while Philometer took his preparatory ibuprofen. (SwG Fun Facts: 69% of the team is over the age of 40 and 31% is 60+.)
The media team had convened until the wee hours of the morning making their race day predictions. Time would soon tell whose day it was going to be and if their anticipated outcome would come to pass or if there would be a stunning upset in the ranks.
SwG fans gathered on site eager to cheer each member all the way to the finish line, and the team’s official media correspondents were on their mark and ready to go. Coach Table Runner and I waited anxiously for the media reports to come pouring in and that they did. Coach was confident in the team’s abilities and wasn’t surprised by the news being received.
It was a perfect day for running, and the team’s performance was on point. Tears welled up in my eyes as I watched video of Quilter Foot jogging across the finish line. She joined the team as a walker with a goal of 2 miles a week only 9 weeks ago. By her side and coaching her through to the end was Winchester Walker who was a natural for the cameras throughout the race. Purple Cat clearly enjoyed being a part of their pack but ultimately put her paws into high gear and ran it in to the finish ahead of them.
The media team’s skilled analysis of the runners and projected outcome was proven 100% accurate. Our team dominated the women’s 60-69 age division with Gigi Twinkle Toes dazzling her way to gold and Racing Meemaw snagging the silver.
The entire Soles with Goals team did an amazing job and appears to have had a great time in the process.

Last week I posed the question, “What’s in your fridge?” With absolutely no scientific backing to my conclusion, I definitely think the contents of our refrigerators reflect us as people. So I thought it’d be fun to take a look inside a few refrigerators (and one pantry), create a line-up of characters to whom they actually belong, and see if we can match the owner to the refrigerator.
